How Does Alexa Turn On Smart Lights

Creating mood lighting for any occasion is the future of smart home entertainment and is easier than ever thanks to voice-controlled lights with Alexa. Below we take you through how to get Alexa to turn on lights, step-by-step.

Choose your lighting device

All you need is one of the following:

  • a smart plug;
  • a smart light bulb;
  • a smart wall switch; or
  • a device with Alexa built-in or the Alexa app.

Make sure these devices are compatible with Alexa by looking for the “works with…” section in the Amazon description of the hardware. Alexa works with many smart bulbs including Philips Hue and LIFX bulbs. These products are a great additional to your home because they’re high quality, reliable and offer lots of features. You can get them in classic white and fun colour versions.

Download the Alexa app

Next, you’ll need to download the Alexa app, which is available on Amazon Fire, iOS and Android devices. You’ll probably have the app already if you have an Amazon Echo speaker.

Install your lighting device

Then you’ll need to install and set up your light bulb, plug or switch. Note, in some cases you’ll need to also install the manufacturer’s app, create an account and set up the device there first.

Set up your lighting device

Once that’s complete, launch the Alexa app and follow these steps:

  1. Tap on Devices at the bottom
  2. Now tap on the + icon at the top right
  3. Tap ‘Add Device’
  4. Select the type of device you are setting up (light, plug or switch)
  5. Choose the brand from the list
  6. Follow the instructions on screen

Link your accounts

You will have to link the account for the device (such as a TP-Link or Philips account) with your Amazon account and authorise the Alexa app to use that account.

Rename your lighting device

When you’re setting up your device in the Alexa app you will be given an opportunity to name the bulb and assign it to a room in your smart home. We encourage you to do this so that when you go to instruct Alexa you’ll be able to refer to a single room (or bulb) and she will be able to action your instructions accordingly. For example, you could say: “Alexa, set the [bulb name or room] to 50 percent brightness.”

Instruct Alexa

With setup complete, you are now ready to unwind in the bath with mood lighting, switch the living room lighting to fun colours for a party atmosphere or dim the lights for a movie night. Alexa is on hand to help, you just need to let her know what you’re after. So tap the Alexa app or speak to Alexa on your Amazon Echo smart speaker. You might like to say to her:

“Alexa, turn on the kitchen lights”
“Alexa, dim the living room lights”
“Alexa, turn the bathroom lights orange”
